The Grand Imam: Egyptians Will Not Forget Shenouda’s Patriotic and National Stances
The Grand Imam of al-Azhar, Prof. Ahmad at-Tayyeb
The Grand Imam of al-Azhar, Prof. Ahmad at-Tayyeb, extended his condolences to Egypt and the world over the death of His Holiness Pope Shenouda III, Pope of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria, who died Saturday 17 March, 2012. At-Tayyeb praised Shenouda’s patriotic and national stances. He especially praised his stance regarding the causes of Palestine and Jerusalem, two causes that none of the Egyptians will forget. He also glorified Shenouda’s love for Egypt and the Egyptians and his keenness on achieving peace and social security among citizens of the same nation. At-Tayyeb- in a press release- mentioned that Egypt lost one of its great figures in such critical moments when their wisdom and experience are needed. He added, “Shenouda’s patriotic stances, benevolent character and persistent pursuit of goodness were not only on the national level but on the international one as well, since he was preoccupied with the causes of Palestine and Jerusalem and exerted tremendous efforts to defend them.” Moreover, at-Tayyeb referred to Shenouda’s quote “Egypt is not a country we live in but a country that lives within us.” He also highlighted that Egyptians will not forget this quote that best reflects his patriotic character. “May God reward Egyptians and Christians for his loss, “he said. At-Tayyeb finally said, “Al-Azhar feels the loss of Pope Shenouda and we pray to God that He grants Egypt figures that can carry Shenouda’s message of love, brotherhood and peace.”
